Bormla Youth Traditional Boat Building Project
Start date: Feb 1, 2012,
Every year the youth section takes part in the traditional regatta. As a club we have always worked towards developing the youth sector especially to help other youngsters to stay on the right track and away from drugs and bad habits. This project is about bringing the youths within to community to build a traditional Maltese rowing boat together with our expert boat builder. The techniques of how to build a Maltese “Dghajsa tal-Pass” will be passed on to a younger generation thus also helping to preserve a piece of Maltese folklore and artisanry skill. The transmission of knowledge within this project is intended to take place in an informal setting, before every both building sessions four meetings will take place on issues of European Importance this will take part in the form of a discussion with the participants and the contributions gathered and compiled. This project also included training equipment, equipment which the participants taking part in the project may use to train on for riding the boat which they themselves will be building . It is also envisioned that the youths participating in the project apart from learning the necessary wood work skills they will also be holding regular exercising sessions through the boat building session on how to row, in that the youths will not only be participating directly in building a traditional boat but will also learn how to eventually row it. In conclusion this project aims at encouraging healthy living through the exercising aspect and the transmission of a skill and will be done so in a way that fosters team building and fraternity within the participantsWe started the project with 4 participants but there was much interest that we opened an application for interested parties and eventually we had participants ranging from 18 29 yearsAnother change was that instead of the mini gym and row machine we purchased a heavy duty row machine Concept II.
