Mainsteraming is the participation of children with disabilities in regular classrooms. Mainstreaming is developed to provide the least restictive environment for the inclusion of the students with disabilities as a reflection of the educational approach for everyone. BEP ( Mainstreaming Education Programme) is a special education programme developed by the unit created in the educational instutions for the disabled children, children with disabilities, teachers and parents of those children.
Mainstreaming programme has gained popularity in our country like other countries. Numerious studies on mainstreaming education show that one of the most important problems in this regard is the classroom management by the teachers who lack experience and knowledge of this subject and area. According to the district of national education in Tekkeköy, there are 3005 of secondary school students and 179 ( 5.96%)of them are the mainstreaming students who are included in full-time education. It is also known that many students with learning disabilities are not recorded due to various reasons. It is apparently understood of these data that thare are full-time mainstream students in most of our schools in our district. Additionally, the district doesn't have an independent school for the students in need of special education. At th same time , there isn't a special education training staff in none of our schools in the district.
The teachers are loaded with the responsibility requiring expertise in such an area. Our teachers lacking the experience and knowledge in mainstreaming students and programme take great difficulty in class management , students' active participation in the classroom activities and obeying the class rules. This difficulty creates the problem for the students who need the regular education.
In the six schools included in this project, there are 79 full-tiem mainstreaming studenst . Additionally there are students who have learning difiiculties without BEP record. So, it is obvious that the administrators and the teachers of the schools mentioned above seriously need to receive training from the experts on this topic.
At the end of the project, parcitipants will have the chance to see different applications, compare the programmes carried out in our schools , over our district and country.
They will share their knowledge and experience with other teachers in their schools and nearby schools. There are six public schools in this project, 1 administrator and 2 teachers , 18 people in total. They will receive two weeks of education of classroom management in classes with BEP students. In addition to educational activities, the host country will also be introduced to the participants so that they will broaden their perspective in terms of culture and educational level.
The number of students and the needs of the staff have been taken into account while choosing the participant schools. An instution that has expert trainers on this specific area and that can support the participants with samples has been chosen.
Eekhoutcentrum is an expert instution on this area in Belgium that support in areas such as innovation , personal development and in-service training. As a result , a student who is an active participant in class will take its place in society in his/her later life. With the help of this project, the classes will no longer be a nightmare for the teachers and the regular students and ther will be an efficient class environment.
This project is composed of four stages; preparation activities, mobility, evaluation and dissemination. As a preparation activity, participants will take a seminar to have a prior knowledge about mainstreaming programme and read a book on the subject . Participants will also be introduces to the host country with videos. Mobility will last 15 days except for traveland everyday participants will atke seminar except for weekends. At weekends and after classes on weekdays , the historical palces of the host country and different public schools will be visited.
Before and after the mobility , participants will have an assessment and satisfaction questionnaire.
For dissemination activities, CDs and posters will be prepared. They will be distrubuted to the schools in the city and distict and a seminar will be given to other teachers by the participants. A certificate programme will be organized by the district of national education.
