Carpenter apprentices and trainers will travel to the Transylvanian part of Romania to do some restoration work on the UNESCO-world heritage fortified churches. They learn about the history of the “Siebenbürger” Saxons and the building history of the fortified churches and traditional wooden Romanian constructions. They learn the basics of the Romanian language in a beginner’s course to be able to communicate with the local colleagues on the building sites. The apprentices will get the building skills in the field of restoration and historic preservation which gives them important extra qualifications.
Their accommodations will be in a youth village in the city centre which gives them the possibility to meet and interact with the local people and their colleagues in their free time. The following work will be done at the fortified churches: the building of a chemin de ronde, restoration of church roofs and bell towers, the building and preservation of stairs in and around the fortified churches.
