Backpack Journalism EVS
Start date: May 1, 2015, End date: Dec 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The mission of the Socialna akademija is to contribute to active citizenship, media literacy and social responsibility. The majority of our activities relate to the youth sector, and Socialna akademija also received the status of organisation in public interest in the youth sector. We develop informal education programs, encourage youth activities and initiatives and promote intergenerational cooperation through training, education, research and the promotion of a culture based on common values, such as the respect for human dignity, solidarity, justice and the common good. In 2016 we took the decision to take an active role also in the promotion of the EVS possibilities. Our hosting EVS project "Backpack Journalism EVS allowed 3 young people aged between 18 and 30 to express their personal commitment through unpaid and fulltime voluntary service for up to 6 months in Ljubljana, Slovenia. We hosted 3 long term volunteers from 1th June until 31. December 2016; volunteers arrived from Czech Republic, Italy and France, who were happy to live fully “volunteer spirit”, enjoying an intensive learning process; curious to come to Slovenia and to live in Ljubljana (the capital) in a collective flat; willing to share his/her competences and energy in a dynamic office environment; enthusiastic about joining and supporting our cultural, artistic and educational activities; ready to learn new skills and to be trained into Backpack Journalism methodology and courageous to take the responsibility for their personal projects Young volunteers were given the opportunity to contribute to the daily work of Socialna akademija, dealing with youth information and policies, young people's personal and socio-educational development, civic engagement and active citizenship, non formal education programs, ICTs and media literacy, culture and creativity. Main field of work was within the program Backpack Journalism - according to the unique methodology Think-Travel-Share, developed in 2010. 3 EVS Volunteers had the opportunity to be trained and to take part in most of the main activities of Socialna akademija. Within our incubator, they were also able to develop their own personal project. They enriched the cultural diversity and competences of our coordinating team of volunteers, involved in preparation of Festival BIVAK - festival of travelers and backpack journalists, which has been organised for the second time in september 2015. During the festival, EVS volunteers helped us work with other young migrants and students living in Ljubljana - they provided them with opportunities to present their "book" within "Living library", video recorded their perception of Ljubljana in a short reportage and co-organised alternative tourist visits of Ljubljana.
