PROJECT
FINISHED
Over the last years, there has been a lot of talk concerning the dominance of the globalization and the danger of losing national culture. It’s an edge issue that must make us think. We believe in the need to maintain people’s national culture by knowing and at the same time respecting the culture and civilization of others. This is the reason why school, as the main mechanism of future citizens’ education, has the duty to disseminate the necessary knowledge and skills to the youth so as to make them “culturally literate”.
Therefore, this proposed project acknowledges the great importance of people’s cultural heritage as well as the teachers’ need for training in this area. Furthermore, it perceives the necessity to develop an action plan inside the school unit that will lead to knowledge acquirement and its utilization for improvement and development. It also aims to the teachers’ professional empowerment through attending seminars abroad, job shadowing in schools abroad as well as teaching in them. All these developed dynamics will benefit directly and indirectly the main recipients of this effort, the students who, as future citizens of this place, have the need to come into contact with the special features of our race and the elements of our intangible cultural heritage; to love their homeland and be prepared to defend it in any occasion. Moreover, the school as an institution will be upgraded and modernized through this effort; it will acquire a European dimension and extend its internationalization.
More specifically, this proposed project directly addresses our school’s educational community which consists of 14 teachers, 130 children and twice as many parents and even indirectly, the wider society through the dissemination of the results. After the acquisition of the necessary knowledge at the seminars abroad, a lot of actions will be integrated in the students’ cross-curricular courses in order to achieve the project’s objectives. In these actions children’s parents as well as their grandparents will be involved since they can offer a great deal as live vectors of our tradition. Several external collaborators will further reinforce our effort. The project’s implementation is expected to have a huge impact and constant assessment. The long term benefits from this project directly affect all the involved parties. On the one hand, the knowledge, the attitude and the skills that will be acquired are definitely going to accompany the persons throughout their lives and be a part of their cultural identity. The 1st Lakatamia Primary School, on the other hand, will develop as an institution and put its own mark on the European dimension of education.
