The Wilhelm-von-Humboldt-Gemeinschaftsschule, a progressive inclusive comprehensive primary and secondary school under development, strives to improve the quality of its foreign language teaching. The individualised concept of learning with its open learning arrangements and heterogeneous and multi-age groupings offers great chances but also poses great challenges, especially for the foreign language classroom. We have thus embarked on a quest to find the royal road to individualised foreign language teaching in heterogeneous multi-age groupings. In our project five foreign language teachers are going to participate in in-service teacher training courses in European countries whose official languages are our languages of instruction. The courses will have different topics as to ensure a mutual supplementation and the largest possible increase in our competencies. Altogether we are expecting impulses for the further development of the didactics and methods of our foreign language teaching, especially concerning competency-grid-based assessment, as well as the integration of current linguistic and cultural aspects of the respective countries in our teaching. Thus we will find support in our continuous endeavour to enhance our curricula in order to prepare our pupils for the challenges and chances of a multicultural society and to encourage them to embrace it. Furthermore, the participants will become role models for lifelong learning for everybody involved in our school life.
