The plan involved students of Agriculture sectors, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Artistic sector, who were accompanied by their teachers and two assistant directors. The issue was the cultivation of aromatic and medicinal plants, processing, packaging, production of essential oils and the implementation to the market. Aromatic and medicinal plants and especially their organic farming was an interesting topic for students of Agriculture industry, and Electrical Engineering students Mechanical Engineering and Artistic focused in the areas of processing, packaging, marketing and advertising. Agriculture is a primary industry today in Cyprus unfortunately contributes very little to the local economy, as agricultural imports are greater than exports. The aim is to find ways to generate new agricultural products, so that Cyprus minimized the import from other countries.
The visit and the education of students took place as planned at the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF) Thessaloniki, as host institution is one of the largest research institutions in the country in agriculture. Students had the opportunity to work and be trained in NAGREF workshops and watch modern methods of improvement and production of aromatic and medicinal plants.
In addition to teaching at NAGREF students had the opportunity to visit and be trained in private companies which are specialist in production and processing of agricultural products as well as secondary education and higher education institutions.
Some of the educational institutions were the American agricultural college, the EPAL Connect and 6th Evening EPAL Thessaloniki and the Chameleon.
Ornamental plants production companies, nurseries and modern greenhouses hydroponics unique in terms of size, technology, equipment and use environmentally friendly forms of energy.
Standard cooperative units vertically integrated branded production systems, sophisticated packaging and innovative Dicti distribution and disposal of these products both in the domestic market in the world.
Aside from purely educational program students had the opportunity to visit cultural - archaeological sites and museums.
Finally the accommodation and welfare of students for 15 days away from their families had a positive effect on socialization and increase students' confidence as they come from a border region with relatively high socio-economic problems.
During the program there was continuously interaction of participants and evaluation of the program which has allowed us to face any problems immediately.
The objectives of the program were achieved with the above, and it seemed so by the enthusiasm of students during and upon return to school and to their families. In addition to mention that the program was enriched with more activities than originally planned to give the students an opportunity to gain more experience.
Also important was the influence of students to other friends at school achieving the interest of them to participate in the next program.
