Appetite for Waste

Poverty even in the modern society, increasing sizes of the landfills, greenhouse gases emissions are the problems that are all connected with one issue - the ever increasing waste of food. This issue is one of the key problems in the European societies not only because it is a danger to the environment but also because it is a part of the paradox situation of people, companies, supermarkets and restaurants throwing out the perfectly good food, while the majority of the world is starving. In order to develop awareness about this issue, a project 'Appetite for Waste” will be hosted in Lithuania on August 16-22, 2015 (+2 days of travel). The project is implemented by organizations from countries, where they either have a big social issue of people wasting food, or they don’t have a proper food waste management (Lithuania, Croatia, Romania, Poland, Italy, Latvia). There will be 6 participants from each country (+2 activity coordinators from Lithuania) that are interested in the topic (5 participants 18-30 years old + 1 team leader). [Objectives] The main objective of the project is to increase and develop awareness of environmental and social issues caused by excessive consumerism and incompetent waste management and try to find the creative and sustainable solutions for these problems on the individual and small community level. This aim should be reached by 1) introducing the youth with existing problems caused by food waste and share the knowledge about some of the possible solutions from each participating country; 2) generating new ideas or taking the good examples from leading countries in waste management and find creative ways on how to implement those locally; 3) teaching youth how to spread their gained knowledge to their community and beyond; and develop greater awareness in the social circles of participants proving that actions of every person counts. Even though the project is aimed to encourage people to look for solutions for this one particular problem, it also should help the participants to become more active and involved in other European issues as well. [Activities & methodology] In order to achieve these objectives, a range of non-formal education methods developed by all the partner organisations will be employed. Main activities will raise the awareness of the food waste issue and show the ways of what can be done to solve it. All the activities requires creative and active participation of the youth in the project. The main events and activities are the following: 1) meeting the environmental activists and social volunteers 2) conducting game like, though educational, field researches, 3) discussions in non-formal environment, 4) cooking classes related to the topic, 5) country presentations, 6) specialized group exercises, simulations, 7) application of art as NFE method, 8) analyses of relevant video materials, 9) game quizzes, 11) games connected to the topic, 12) feedbacks, reflections, evaluations and much more. In order to facilitate integration of the participants: 13) cultural evenings, 14) energizers, 15) ice-breaking and socializing activities will also be organised. Since the project goal is to reach the public and disseminate the results effectively: 16) special videos, banners and 17) e-booklet will be prepared by the participants. All of this will ensure that the project would induce a positive effect on the participants, organisations and the target groups in regional, national and international levels. [Impact on the participants] It is expected that participants will not only improve their knowledge on the issue but also they will get a number of skills and competences needed to share that knowledge in their social circles or international groups. They will get practical knowledge of how they can improve their conduct towards food and teach or encourage others to do so. At the same time, the project would help them grow internationally, increase public awareness of their actions and enhance their capacities of reaching the objectives of youth development. [Wider impact – target groups] General public and unemployed youth within it are expected to be impacted as well. Firstly, the participants will share the knowledge acquired throughout the project within their own communities. The results dissemination will be also facilitated through involvement of mass-media and spreading of videos and e-booklet prepared during the project. As a result, the number of people interested in environmental and social issues in the regions could increase, as well as the number of volunteers and activists, who are working with this kind of issues. [Long-term benefit] As a result, the project should develop greater awareness about the food waste and everyday activities that can help to decrease it. Therefore, it is expected that the more people will receive the message, the less environmental, economical and social issues related to this problem will occur.
