RSG 't Rijks is a large comprehensive school in the southwest of the Netherlands. At the moment it has 2670 pupils and 250 staff. The school offers a wide range of thematic options to cater for the different interests of its students. Since the introduction of the bilingual (TTO) department in 2001 internationalisation and focus on the European dimension have been key in school policy . This has not only lead to a great many long-lasting international contacts and projects but also to new ideas and teaching concepts such as CLIL and project- and activity-based learning (Technasium) which have been incorporated into the curriculum. The current project is aimed at two groups of staff. In the first group a number of teachers work in the bilingual (TTO) department and need to further develop their teaching skills as stipulated in the strategic development plan of this department. It is envisaged that a group of ten (10) teachers will attend international professional development courses over a period of two years. Workshops on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Methodology will be conducted by expert CLIL teacher trainers with many years of experience in training European Teachers. These will take place in an international setting enabling networking and international orientation / cooperation. Similarly, four (4) teachers from this department will attend international workshops organised by accredited providers of the IBO in the same period of two years. Participants in the tailor-made professional development courses as described above are expected to develop their competences in applying CLIL and IB methodology. This is in line with the strategic policy plan for bi-lingual (TTO) education in our school and is meant to guarantee the quality of teaching and expertise in this department.
A second group involves eight (8) staff (management/ teachers / trainees) who will take part in job shadowing and teaching activities in our partner schools over a period of two years
Both management and teaching staff will work on a number of competences (leadership / organisation / didactic skills) to improve the quality of management and the type of education / teaching the school provides. For instance, by working on how to link the internationalisation goals as stated in our school development plan with day-to-day activities. Participants in this project will learn how to link the mission of the school with the goals of internationalisation in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude. It is also anticipated that the project activities will lead to further methodological and didactic developments / ideas which can be employed not only in the bi-lingiual classes but also in other departments in the school. The same goes for the way in which the school is organised / managed. Project activities will by their nature enhance the international dimension at RSG 't Rijks.
By continuing to cooperate with new, as well as existing partners we aim to work towards a sustainable, cross-curricular plan for internationalisation. We also believe that in the long run widening the international perspective of both the school organisation and the teaching staff will lead to new- and innovative ideas that will improve the quality of the school as a whole and prepare our pupils and staff for the future.
