ACTIVE – Accredited Training for Volunteers in Europe

The main interests of the project are the quality assurance about volunteering, the need of training and of formal accreditation in the sector. Volunteering is one of the ways in which people contribute to positive societal change and is therefore central to European ideals of democracy, inclusion and active citizenship; but volunteering also often leads to new, paid jobs being created, and new services being developed. In the experience of the partners a significant number of volunteers come from the groups of early school leavers, unemployed, refugees, active retired people; for many of them training can be a second chance at education through an accredited flexible course in a supportive environment and at work. The project develops a flexible, adaptable accredited training programme, setting a European standard in the training of volunteers serving people with disabilities. The developed training programme 1) follows an inclusive design process to ensure it reflects the needs of volunteers, of people with disabilities and of the voluntary organizations delivering services; 2) is module-based and combines face-to-face training and home learning; 3) focuses on peer support; 4) confirms its design process by a specific dimension: people with disabilities will be recruited to train as volunteers mentors in all those circumstances in which their experience can be especially helpful; 5) builds on top of existing mainstream training also provided by other voluntary organisations; 6) addresses disability issues within a mainstream setting; 7) ensures accreditation and transferability.
