Act Now: Youth for Roma Rights
Start date: Apr 3, 2013,

The project: “Act Now: Youth for Roma Rights" is a 7 day, international youth exchange bringing together 36 participants from Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Germany and Ukraine. EYFA as applicant is both coordinating and sending organization with the exchange to take place in Kiev, Ukraine. The participants will be young people either already involved in the fight against discrimination and promoting equality or interested in becoming active in this field. Together, they will explore the past and present discriminatory practices within Europe and the positions adopted by various European institutions, with a focus on marginalization and stigmatization of Roma individuals and communities; they will share experiences and strategies of challenging discrimination; develop critical perspectives on how to strengthen youth movements and learn relevant skills for doing so.This exchange will be built around consensus decision making, using popular education methods so participants can empower themselves to question and challenge their own beliefs and work together constructively and horizontally to develop future projects to further tolerance and inclusion in the positions adopted by various European communities. The programme will include skill-sharing workshops, like community organizing, campaigning, facilitation and consensus, lobbying and non-violent communication. There will also be brainstorms, project planning and a public outreach activity. The objective of the project is for the young participants to leave with the necessary skills to campaign against discrimination; to organize community projects in their local realities and to engage in local and European institutional channels of decision-making. After the exchange, the young people involved will have increased tools and confidence to start or continue to be active in anti-discrimination work. This youth exchange will be co-funded by a benefit event and participant contributions to travel.
