Between 2011 and 2013, the Azores have registered in all school levels the highest school failure rates in the country. For example, one in every four students didn’t graduate from high school. Considering this, the Azorean government has set a priority: the decrease of early school leavers’ rates and of failure in education. Aiming this, our school is applying for an E+ grant that will allow a school education staff mobility, which will work as an ally to the Regional Plan of Promotion of School Success – “ProSucesso”. We believe that positive achievements in education depend largely on high qualified teachers. Hence, it is urgent the promotion of teachers’ professional development, since school staff need skills to continue innovating and adapting to the new teaching practices. This school education staff mobility will assure the update, enhancement and support of the staff’s professional development, because its principles and goals aim at the promotion of better and higher educational results. Bearing this in mind, we plan to send 10 staff members from different school subjects to participate in courses on the strategic fields of Drama in Education, ICT and Cuisine. The participation in a course on Drama in Education will equip the participants with the knowledge and skills that will help to develop, not only the school’s drama club, but also broaden learners’ imagination, planning, cooperation, and creativity which will allow them to, individually and collectively, uptake the Key Competences and the XXI Key Skills.The growing importance of education set on the acquisition of digital skills demands that teachers are modernized and prepared to profit from the Open Educational Resources, which will help learners to better respond to the demands of our competitive and global society. We also feel that young learners need to attain vocational skills training that will allow them to, successfully, enter the employment market, in order to become active members in society. Thus, attending a course in cuisine will provide participants essential knowledge and techniques that will help learners face the high unemployment rates, in a region where Tourism is vital to the local economic growth. In long term, it is our belief that these education staff mobilities aiming at drama (deeply rooted in the local cultural heritage), digital literacy and vocational empowerment are essential tools in our struggle against school absenteeism and failure.
