Accessibility in Accommodation & Catering Sectors for Disabled People
The research conducted by ETOA (European Tour Operators Association) in 2011 indicates that there are significant barriers in Accessibility of Accommodation and Catering services to people with different types of disabilities.Only 2% of examined hotels have employed person using sign language. None of them offered information or other material printed in Braille. As regards the Catering services, more than half of them are inaccessible for people with physical disabilities because of environmental barriers.Only 2% of restaurants had conducted special training in disability issues and none of the hotels had such training so far.The conclusion of the research is that the staff of Hotel & Catering services do not have skills necessary to provide adequate services to clients with disabilities what is a consequence of certain lack of coverage of that subject in available vocational training offer. The full access to Hotel & Catering services for all clients without discrimination on the ground of disability is one of obligations of modern European society. The necessity to train qualified personnel to provide proper services in mentioned sectors is crucial. The TOI project ACAD 2 aims to implement the ECVET system which will facilitate the accumulation, recognition and validation of work-related skills and knowledge acquired during providing services for disabled clients across Europe in Hotel & Catering sectors. ACAD 2 project will provide:an ECVET curriculum and training programme (paper based & online WCAG 2.0 SCORM e-platform) for personnel and management staff of Hotel & Catering services, training them how to provide accessible services for disabled customers (visual, hearing, learning, mobility & speech impairments) involving at least 250 employees; qualification validation mechanism (control tool) for staff of addressed sectors in providing services to clients with disabilities; elaboration of Manual for Hotel & Catering service providers who offering services for disabled clients; an EU ECVET-ECTS portfolio for offering services for disabled clients.
