A Metropolis of Ubiquitous Services (m:Ciudad)
Start date: Dec 1, 2007, End date: Nov 30, 2010 PROJECT  FINISHED

Description The final goal of the m:Ciudad project is to set up the basis for the engineering of a complete new service infrastructure, a metropolis of truly ubiquitous services...M:CIUDAD's primary goal is to set up the basis for the engineering of a complete new service infrastructure, a metropolis of truly ubiquitous services with the 'mobile as a service platform', the 'user adds value' paradigm and 'the very long tail' business model as its three main pillars.  Just imagine what kind of applications would be feasible if our mobile devices could not only present data but could also provide valuable information to other uses? What if your chosen mobile device would be able to create instant services with information, contents and knowledge? What if this knowledge could be used remotely by other users in a simple way with their mobile devices? Just imagine the amount of available knowledge provided by these services. Millions or even billions of potential sources with valuable information: constantly updated, relevant to our instant interests but remaining context aware would become available, anywhere and anytime. With M:CIUDAD, this vision will become reality. The project will provide the necessary user-friendly creation tools in order to turn every user with a mobile device into a service provider. In addition, it will offer a model for knowledge warehouse, a proposed specific search engine and a set of business models for users, service providers and third parties, mainly SMEs. M:CIUDAD aims a service architecture which is a set of mobile tools and a platform to allow users to create focused, knowledge-based mobile micro-services known under the name of M:CIUDAD U + Services.  M:CIUDAD U + Services A U + service is an application that displays and disseminates knowledge (in any format, including content) according to certain rules. Henceforward, a user running a U + service in his/her mobile terminal, he/she becomes a "prosumer" meaning that he/she act as both a provider and receiver of knowledge and content. The U + services can freely be shared and downloaded and are still fully operational on the end-user mobile terminal. Furthermore, the M:CIUDAD environment allows users to define and create their own U + services, either from scratch, or by modifying an already existing U + service. Thus, by doing this, a user also creates knowledge in the M:CIUDAD framework.  The project M:CIUDAD differs from other successful internet services that offer user-generated content by going beyond this. It provides user-generated knowledge exchange in a mobile environment!
