In 2015, the European Youth Parliament in Germany (EYP) looks back at 25 years of successful educational work. The 25th National Selection Conference of the EYP is taking place in Passau from May 26th until June 2nd 2015.
German 10th to 12th-grade students from all educational backgrounds, as well as apprentices aged 16 to 22-years-old experience democratic decision making first hand together with international guest delegations.
All participants will have a week-long debate about topics gathered under the claim “Regional – Ecological – Sustainable”. The debate topics will cover different aspects, such as the compatibility of ecological sustainability and economic development on a regional level. Delegates will summarise their results in form of resolutions that will be debated according to European Parliament rules.
Participants mixed in international committees experience an intensive exchange of opinion, strategies and intellectually challenging debates. Further, these delegates will be asked to find compromise and commonly agree upon a complex, yet diverse solution strategy.
Our participants benefit the most on a personal level. Through the experience of intense debates about topics of European relevance, participants develop a broader understanding of European issues. The event gives youngsters the chance for personal development and allows them to realise their own responsibility for a European Society. Further language skills are trained, as well as group dynamic communication skills. All different participant roles organisers, committee moderators and journalists are individually trained and a given the chance to fully apply their individual potential. This positive experience motivates many youngsters, to actively participate in a democratic society and engage actively in a voluntary capacity. In cooperation with other European Organisations the European Youth Parliament enables 145 youngsters to experience a very unique parliamentary simulation.
Europe is not an abstract and distant concept for the European Youth Parliament. It is a vivid environment created by people enthusiastic about it. Through an intensive academic preparation of the participants, both debates and results of the event show our participants’ extensive academic understanding of the topics.
Our educational work is award-wining, the EYP has been rewarded with the Merité Européen and the Theodor-Heuss-Medal. The evaluations of our events show that over 70 % of participants would like to engage more actively in society, after participating at an EYP event. The European Youth Parliament give a voice to the European Youth.
