Biosecurity is of big importance in preventing the introduction and spread of pathogens and, consequently, to maintain the health of farmed fish. Healthier fish in aquaculture result in better fish welfare, better sustainability of fish production systems and less antimicrobial use. Despite these benefits, biosecurity is limited by different factors: i) lack of knowledge on ways for improvement in aquaculture; ii) shortage of adequate ways to enhance communication; iii) unclear methodologies to assess and measure the implementation of biosecurity measures and their cost-effectiveness and iv) the low number of trained professionals.

To overcome the challenges, the Project can identify how biosecurity and welfare issues exist in aquaculture and the approaches to understanding barriers for biosecurity implementation. The project can promote the development of tailored options in farms based on the evaluation of their risks, the feasibility of selected biosecurity measures, and their economic benefits.
