Youth Workers for Early School Leavers was a project under the Erasmus+ Programme, Key Action 1 - Mobility project for young people and youth workers – Youth workers’ training and networking, which was carried out in Kecskemet, Hungary and Palermo, Italy by the participating organisations Nyitott Szemmel Egyesulet (HU) and Per Esempio Onlus (IT). The project foresaw the mobility of one Hungarian and one Italian participant from which one was a NEET youth (neither in employment, education or training). As reducing early school-leaving is an important benchmark of the European Union within the EU2020 Strategy and is a particular priority in Hungary (which is among the countries with the lowest participation in learning) and in Italy (where early school-leaving is above the EU average) the project introduced the exchange of youth workers as a tool for exchanging good practices and share knowledge on the above mentioned topic. Following the overall objectives of the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field (2010-2018) the project aimed at supporting the development of youth work and other non-formal opportunities as one of a range of actions to address early school leaving.
The methodologies used were informal and non-formal learning, peer education, learning by doing and job shadowing. The youth workers were actively involved in the work with the local community as well as in the supporting activities of the projects with early school-leavers such as project management and research and analysis.
The overall objects of the project were:
- improving the youth workers' professional and personal competences;
- promoting the value of peer education and non-formal learning ;
- promoting intercultural dialogue, cultural diversity and anti-discrimination by fostering the encounter of young people from different countries;
- reducing the risk of school drop-out and/or introducing a path to re-enter education, and reducing the risk of social exclusion of the target group;
- promote the exchange of experience and good practice in the field of youth work and non-formal education, particularly in preventing and reducing early school-leaving;
- providing information access on educational, training and mobility possibilities provided by the European Union;
- broadening the networks of the partner organisations and fostering cooperation with, and exchange between, those active in youth work; developing a long-term, sustainable partnership;
- promoting the Erasmus+ Programme as a tool for development in the youth field and promoting its objectives.
The expected results, impact and longer term benefits of the project were:
- development of personal, professional and language competences of the youth workers, hence doubling their chances for employment;
- contribution to reducing the number of early school-leavers and prevention of their social exclusion;
- identification of good practices in the field that can be applied in different national contexts;
- strengthen base for lifelong learning;
- enlarged capacity of the participating organisations in the field of youth; broader networks and a strong partnership;
- reinforced European cooperation in the youth field;
- more visibility of, and increased participation in EU funded programmes.
