In the project "Youth in a changing Europe" 30 young people from Turkey, Italy, Germany and Ukraine will come together in a 6-day seminar in Berlin to discuss the issues, backgrounds and concerns of youth and protests in Europe with each other and with policy-makers. The participants will work in three groups focusing on democracy, diversity and media. Later, they will discuss the topics with representatives of research institutes, media as well as activists. Finally, the participants will discuss their results with decision-makers in the Europa Haus in Berlin. Experts and members of the German and European parliament as well as our partner organisations of the European Movement will be present for debating and talking about the ideas of the participants and the event will be open to general public. Together with decision-makers, we will create our common aims for the future and we will discuss potential policy actions to make realizing these ambitions possible. The issues and questions we want to raise are: Democracy: What makes young people today in Europe engage in political activism such as protests? What can these actions tell us about citizen's participation? Can these actions be considered a ‘distilled’ form of active participation of youth and engagement in democratic life or rather a phenomenon of the margins? What are the effects for the exercise of active citizenship? Diversity: How is young people's political activism intertwined with ideas about social equality, gender, sexuality and ethnicity - dimensions that structure our understanding of inequality? Media: How are these forms of political activism presented in (new) media, such as social media platforms? In a close dialogue with activists, policy makers and academics, the participants will examine to what extent young people's perspectives on active participation differ from, and meet with, those of the experts who are dominating the public discourse and the political decision-making. A space will be created in which our participants are encouraged to reflect on their own perspectives in dialogue with others. During the seminar, participants will have the opportunity to make their voices heard and create concrete suggestions for decision-makers and thus actively participate in democratic life in Europe. This seminar will give young citizens the chance to engage across borders with each others, and across hierarchies with the ones in charge.
