Youth Exchange Group Leadership; The Consolidation..
Youth Exchange Group Leadership; The Consolidation Seminar - Y.W.Ireland
Start date: Apr 20, 2009,
Background informationAll participants will have previously participated on the original YEGL training course in Greece (13th - 20th March 2008), organised jointly by "Kids in Action", Greece and "Youth work Ireland - Galway", Ireland, who have been co-operating over many years in youth leadership training courses. It was however, through their co-operation in the large scale multilateral youth exchange projects called "Creativity" (www.creativity.gr) that they have commonly identified and agreed on the crucial role that group leaders have to play towards assurance of learning and safety of the young people taking part and thus in their care. This part of the ProgrammeThrough their acceptance onto, and their participation in the initial Y.E.G.L. training, all participants have agreed to organise / participate as leaders in an international youth exchange between the dates of the initial training and this 'Consolidation Seminar'. At this seminar we shall share, discuss and learn from each others experiences, as well as listening to and learning through interaction with / from invited expert speakers and facilitators. Such invited speakers shall include:Vicki Donnelly, Education Officer with the Galway One world Centre(session on our internalised 'prejudices' and how we need to be aware of these, when leading a group)Gearóid Ó Maolmhichíl, Children's Officer with the G.A.A. (session on the special arrangements / attention needed around 'Child protection' when operating at home or in another country)Ongoing DiscussionAll participants shall have read / explored and be familiar with the following publications which shall form the basis for further discussion:"Child safety and youth exchange programs - Guidelines for good practice" published by Leargas, Irish National Agency of the Youth Program, "Going international - Opportunities for all" published by SALTO-YOUTH Inclusion Resource Center, "International Youth Exchange guide" published by Leargas, Irish National Agency of the Youth program, "Intercultural learning T-Kit" published by the Partnership between the CoE and EC, "European Portfolio for youth workers and youth leaders" published by the CoE and last but not least all relevant documentation related to key competencies for life long learning and also United Nations' Convention on the rights of the child,Youth in Action ProgrammeIt is critical that all participants be fully briefed and kept up to date on the Youth in Action Programme, to this end a facilitator from the Irish National Agency 'Léargas' shall be invited to conduct an information session and to facilitate / implement a learning tool so that familiarity with the programme is achieved.Y.E.G.L. - Consolidation SeminarAIMWith the suggested project, we aim at creating a long term, substantial educational experience for intercultural group exchange youth leaders towards the maximization of learning and minimization of risk for the young people they will be leading in the future, and through these, at increasing the recognition of their role as learning facilitators/educators.OBJECTIVES To improve participants' knowledge, skills and attitudes in regards with leadership of groups participating in intercultural youth exchanges supported by "Youth in Action" program. To provide space for sharing of experiences and good practices on the given topic; To motivate participants to apply the developed competences in their projects; To provide participants with space for reflection and feedback on the training process and content; To offer a first hand intercultural experience that will be crucial for their future role but also their personal development. To plant the seeds for the development of common guidelines for European group exchange youth leadership; To research the possibility for the implementation of youth exchanges and other Youth in Action projects.
