Start date: Jun 17, 2014,
End date: Oct 31, 2014
PROJECT
FINISHED
The characteristic feature of Youngsters On The Air (YOTA) project is using Amateur Radio as a tool for non-formal learning and gaining new competences, such as multilingualism, interculturalism and handling emergency communications.
Globally, Amateur Radio is best known for technical experiments and the ability to contact people worldwide but it includes social skills as well. So called Ham Spirit has been been formulated over a hundred years ago by first radio amateurs. Basic components of Ham Spirit are equality notwithstanding gender and age, internationality, brotherhood and solidarity, lifelong learning with the help of the more experienced colleagues, open-mindedness to new ideas and "fair play".
Youngsters On The Air (YOTA) projects have been organised earlier three times (2011-2013). In 2014 project will be organised by Finnish Amateur Radio League (SRAL). SRAL is a member of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and has over 4000 members.
SRAL's objective is to execute the YOTA 2014 project in order to help European youth to familiarize with Amateur Radio as a tool for widening their perspectives in various walks of life, e.g. equality, culture, education (especially multilingualism), career planning, employment and others as well as a tool for fighting against racism, discrimination and extremism.
YOTA 2014 will have 60 participants from 15 countries between the age of 13 - 30. Most of them are active radio amateurs, some are interested in the hobby, working on a civic theme and radio technology.
The activities will be implemented using instruments of non-formal learning, including debates, games, role plays, exercises, interactive workshops, presentations, group work, discussions and playful competitions.
Expected impacts in the benefit of the participants are improved linguistic, social, teamwork, management, technical competences and other relevant skills. For our partner organisations remarkable impacts are gained through their members who have participated in YOTA events.
Through YOTA activities youth are encouraged to actively participate on local, national and international levels. YOTA participants will possess skills that can be easily transferred to the aforementioned levels during their future activities.
