The international youth exchange “The Mountain Challenge” gathered 34 young people from 5 countries (Norway, Armenia, Georgia, Czech Republic and Italy) and gave them unique experience of healthy living and ecological awareness through the magic of Caucasus Mountains in Armenia from 5 to 15 August 2015. Half of the participants of this exchange were those with fewer opportunities from deprived mountainous regions and rural areas.
The exchange included rich casual sport activities promoting healthy lifestyle; specially summer activities in mountainous regions such as climbing, hiking, hunting, herb collecting…etc.
There is strong interdependence between healthy lifestyle and ecological awareness. Those who want to live long and healthy are usually the ones who also know a lot about food quality, healthy eating patterns and value ecologically clean and traditional food. Participants engaged in group discussions, made short visits to traditional or ecological food producers from mountainous region (farms, honey and wine production plants…etc) and learned about their production cycle but also about the people who work and make things happen there.
Caucasus Mountains are not only ecological beauty but also cultural treasure box. Participants visited a local village and met the people and and observe the way they live and also helped them with their daily chores. Participants got a feeling of what is like to live in a village deep into the mountains and started to appreciate the local culture and way of life.
Participants discussed with locals and shared with each other ways for sustainable development of mountainous regions taking into account needs and cultural heritage of people living in such regions.
Participants not only presented their culture and country to other participants but had the chance to be disconnected from their ordinary lives and dive into the local rich cultures, be refreshed with the nature based lifestyle and were empowered to look for positives side of life. To this end, intercultural evenings and events were organized and short visits and excursions to local villages and habitats was arranged.
Objectives of the project:
- Promoting healthy lifestyle and healthy behaviours, in particular through the promotion of the practice of outdoor and grassroots sports.
- Getting disconnected from the man-made world and spending wonderful days in nature and being refreshed with the rich culture of people living in the mountainous regions of the Caucasus Mountains.
