The main purpose with the project Work experience In a Global Setting (WIGS) is to offer the students work placement abroad to give them the opportunity to increase their competence within their field of study, develop their skills in foreign languages, deepen their understanding of the European labour market and the increasing demands for flexibility and co-operation across boundaries, and develop their digital competence (ICT skills). Young people with experience of work placement abroad are a valuable asset in a municipality in a sparsely populated area in the north of Sweden, since they provide new influences within their occupational field and, more so, a general change of attitude with regard to the labour market, educational possibilities, mobility and possibilities for international co-operation. In our sparsely populated region, the southern Lapland, there are few or none possibilities to facilitate the learning of foreign languages, intercultural meetings or get new influences within the field of study. The economic situation, both on an individual and a civic level, leads to many young people missing out on the possibility to improve within their field of study, to learn how to cooperate with other people outside their given social and cultural context. A poor professional competence in combination with a fear of leaving one’s hometown too often leads to youth unemployment, alienation and passivity. This has, of course, negative consequences for the individual as well as for society. This project seeks to meet the objective of the strategic framework for Europe 2020 and, in particular, the specific objectives set for Erasmus+: Through this project the student will achieve a higher level of professionalism within their vocational careers, an improved knowledge of foreign languages and ICT, and an increased awareness that today’s global labour market indeed requires co-operation and flexibility. The participants will also be forced to break a far too gender stereotype constellation due to their choice of vocational training education through continuous cooperation across the study orientations. They will also be able to convey their newly gained international experiences to fellow students, teacher and representatives from their respective professions, both during and after the completed work placement. The work placement abroad will take place in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. From previous experience, we know that the quality of ROC Friese Poort with regard to the management of our students and the selection of their work placement is excellent. The project runs from autumn 2014 to spring 2016 and comprises work placements of four weeks each for a total of 12 students (year 2-3) from three vocational programmes: Electrical and Energy Programme (EE), Restaurant and Food Programme (RL) and Health and Social Care Programme (VO). To gain the most result from the work placement, there will be meticulous preparations, as well as feedback during their stay abroad and detailed evaluations and follow-ups after the completion of the work placement.
