The Auschwitz Jewish Center (AJC) is the only Jewish presence in Oświęcim – the town the Germans called Auschwitz – which is primarily associated with the site of the darkest tragedy of the 20th century. AJC is affiliated with the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in New York. AJC’s mission is to honor the former residents of the town and to teach future generations about the destruction caused by the Holocaust as well as modern dangers of intolerance and prejudice. Hosting volunteers has become an essential element of our work as it contributes to developing connections between people different nationalities and cultures thus reducing mutual prejudice. The same is true in regard to the positive impact of volunteers on the local community. In addition the project contributes to fostering the idea of volunteering in the town of Oświęcim. AJC’s educational programs are geared towards diverse audiences from children to seniors in order to effectively teach about the prewar local Jewish community as well as sensitize to the dangers of xenophobia and other forms of intolerance. Through our programming we are inspiring young people to become agents of change capable of standing up for the democratic values. This year two females from Germany and Ukraine were qualified for volunteering at the AJC. We expect this project to become an opportunity for them to develop their interpersonal and intercultural skills as well as provide insights into their own interests and passions thanks to diverse range of activities at the AJC. In this way the experience of volunteering in our organization will enable the participants to become more open and flexible in new situations and environments. All those skills will certainly be appreciated in their professional careers by their future employers. The success of this project will be measured by the volunteers readiness and ability to adapt to new circumstances, their respect to different cultures, curiosity, self-reflection and commitment to standing up to prejudice.
