Wildflowers are part of the landscape, arts & culture of every country in Europe., a little known element of our common European heritage. They are our living link with Ice Age hunters, the first farmers & herders who crossed our continent, the living symbols of human emotion (love, remembrance, hope), the providers of food, medicine, materials & inspiration, familiar to the diverse cultures who have shaped our history and landscape for millennia. We aim to re-inspire interest in their art and culture history for a new generation of Europeans, to encourage curiosity about our landscapes, their history and their future; and to provide a focus for livelihoods in culture and sustainable tourism that support rural communities in remote or disappearing landscapes. This project aims to celebrate the art and culture of wildflowers, in the places where they grow, amongst the communities who maintain them, based around 3 main foci: 1. the PATCHWORK MEADOW (art project open to all, to contribute a 15x15 cm fabric ‘flower square’, using any technique or design, along with its story), to be sewn together for national exhibitions & with those of other countries to form a European exhibition which will travel to all the festivals. To be made available through an online archive2. annual WILDFLOWER FESTIVALS in 5 sites across Europe with local arts, crafts, cuisines, flower /culture tours, and performances, connected by the exchange of performers between countries, and exhibitions of the art & culture history projects3. COMMUNITY CULTURE HISTORY – we aim to create community archives of oral histories, traditional agricultural & craft skills, wildflower folklore, community recipes etc by bringing together relevant individuals from each country for training in recording, archiving & exhibiting skills & inviting a range of individuals in the project communities to participate.Celebrating what connects people across Europe to each other, their history & their landscapes.
