Who Are These People: faces of forced displacement in Ukraine and Germany
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Feb 28, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

On the background of the historical and current situation in Ukraine and Germany it is planned to carry out a project which would deal with the situation of refugees and internally displaced persons. Both countries face the challenges which are quite alike but still not the same . In both countries the problems of prejudice and discrimination towards the displaced people exist and have to be faced. The central question of the proposed project is the discrimination towards refugees of war and the internally displaced people (who can be also treated as "internal refugees". After moving to a new country or town they face prejudice and numerous obstacles, are discriminatd by local people and can even be seen as a threat. Hovewer, these people are exactly those who find themselves in a prior worse situation due to loss of their home and most of the property, unemployment at a new place, broken family relations, life threat to their family members etc.We want to target this problem through a personal approach to the topic and also through an involvement of the young refugees and IDPs along other participants. We believe the communication with the real people will help participants to overcome their prejudice and fears (if they have some) and to understand why the refugees come to their cities/countries and why they are in need of the special "advantages" from the government. We plan that the participants will share this understanding with their peers, families and present it through the media and art storytelling. Historial examples from WWII will help us put the problem in historical context and see different dimensions of the issue. We plan to carry out two interconnected youth meetings: one will take place in Ukraine and one in Germany, which should respond in each case on the situation in the country. We want to explore the topic of refugement/displacement through both historical (on the basis of WWII history) and modern perspectives. Current situation in both countries will be researched and publicly presented through media and art storytelling: we will meet refugees, internally displaced people, volunteers and social workers dealing with their problems. We will talk to the witnesses, learn about the reasons for escape, situations of exclusion and discrimination, play simulation game for dealing with prejudices and stereotypes and then create multimedia stories using photo, video, interview (during the first encounter in Ukraine) and public theater performance (during the second encounter in Germany). These materials will be published on the project website (to be created), on the facebook page and the site of the East-West-East Network as well as in the local media of participants towns.
