TThe association Linden grüsst - groet - salue - saluda Linden is one of the few volunteer organizations which is active across borders in six European countries. These six villages/cities are Linden-Cuyck (NL), Linden-Lubbeek (B), Linden- Holstein (D), Lalinde (F), Linden-Sankt Georgen Am Walde (A) en Lalin (E).The annual Youth-gathering is organized since 1982, each year in another county.
Young people, age 16 to 22, each with a different social and cultural background, boys as well as girls, take part. Each village/city participates with eight youngsters and two leaders. Local families are host to the visiting young people.
The Youth gathering lasts 10 days and the project in Linden – Lubbeek is called “Science brings us across borders”. Science is offered in an accessible manner with a link to the past, to the present and to the future. The proximity of the University of Louvain as well as the European Parliament is a source of possibilities to enrich knowledge and insights through informing visits and challenging workshops. The red wire through the project is that everyone comes in contact with the results of science and the activities are geared towards the familiarizing of the participants with this notion and that to allow them to realize that the Key Competences of Youth in Action are within reach.
The gathering of young people of six countries allows them to expand their vision and increase one’s self- knowledge, and absorb valuable experiences for their future life:
• Ability to communicate in the own and in a foreign language
• How is one’s behavior in a large group of young people of the same age, unknown before and foreign.
• Conclude that the way of living/working/studying of other participants is appealing, and can be applied to give more value to one’s life
• Expansion of the social aptitudes
This project offers the participants not only new insight, it increases also the bond between the young people with different cultural and social background. The rule for all activities is that the participants are mixed on a daily basis so that everyone is immersed in the intercultural exchange.
These annual Youth-gatherings are an essential link to maintain/strengthen the ties of friendship, and are also an investment for the future so that the association committees in the six villages/cities will continue for the future generation(s).
