PROJECT
FINISHED
The project Through Education to Better Conditions for Children with Special Educational Needs was carried out in Základní škola a Mateřská škola, Ostrava-Poruba, Ukrajinská 19, příspěvková organizace. This organization educates solely pupils with special educational needs (SEN). The aim of the project was to improve the education of pupils with SEN through new special pedagogy methods and observation of exemples of good practice, especially in the area of expressive therapies and practice of social and communication skills of pupils with autism spectrum disorders, use of ICT and improvement of language competences of the staff.
The project was intended for the whole educational staff, both teachers and teaching assistants. Direct participants of mobilities were 15 educational staff (2 men and 13 women, 4 teaching assistants and 11 special education teachers from both 1st and 2nd grade). 17 mobilities were carried out in the framework of the project. This number includes both methodology courses (ICT, social media, elements of drama therapy and art therapy use in work with pupils with SEN), a language course and job-shadowings. Job-shadowings were realized in four institutions educating children with SEN - in Sweden (pupils with Asperger syndrome), Germany (multilingual class of students with behaviour issues), Norway (applied sporting activities) and Poland (ABA therapy).
An integral part of the project activities was dissemination of their outcomes. Mobilities participants shared their newly acquired competencies at school through presentations of new information, experiences and skills and through mentoring the other staff during their implementation in the school work. Materials shared online on the school webpage present the project outcomes to the broad public.
The expected benefits of the project were an improvement of quality of education in our school, improvement of the above-mentioned skills of the project participants and implementation of new methods specific for work with children with SEN. These expectations were fulfilled - our educational staff gained competencies in areas of expressive therapies, ABA therapy, use of ICT in education of pipils with SEN, they developed their language skills and were inspired by methods and organization of classwork used in school where the job-shadowing mobilities took place. Elements of these special pedagogy methods and forms of organization of classwork are gradually successfully implemented in our institution.
