Voluntário/a, Eu Sou!
Start date: Feb 1, 2016, End date: Feb 28, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

We are surrounded by rural areas that were long closed to the outside, and in which “senhoralismo” and the practice of a subsistence economy have kept the people of these regions below the poverty line, almost to the present day.A lot of the youth is unemployed and does not enjoy an active, full and healthy citizenship, which is reflected in the low levels of volunteering, thus verifying that they have a low self-esteem and individual self-recognition, a low ability to undertake businesses or take initiative, and poor access to information. Therefore, it has become very important to carry out this application and we want the young people of these regions to come into contact with the volunteers in the activities, living in different times than the older generations, acquiring new skills and discovering other cultures. This way, they will become more capable of overcoming the obstacles that have crossed their daily lives and will feel more like European citizens. We shan’t fail to also mention that another of the backgrounds of this project is that it enables the local population to live with people from different cultures, promoting solidarity. With regard to the volunteers, we also intend that, in the environment of instability that currently exists in Europe, they acquire a set of tools and skills that are useful in their personal, social and professional life, and appreciate a different culture from theirs, enjoying where we live and our country. The objectives of this project are to promote the acquisition of new skills for the personal, educational and professional development of the volunteers, through non-formal learning experiences; develop a community spirit of solidarity, tolerance and respect; to provide the youth, the community and the volunteers with interculturality; boost creativity and entrepreneurship, fostering job creation; raise awareness of European citizenship and for sustainable growth; develop in the local youth an interest in EVS. Volunteers will be between 18 and 30 years old and will come from Germany and Spain. In this project a participatory methodology will be applied, based on non-formal and informal education activities. Volunteers will be involved in supporting the operation of the Community School and helping the monitors in their daily activities. The young people will develop, according to their own skills and knowledge, activities that fall within the association's departments. To enable the volunteers to learn the Portuguese language (spoken and written), they will help with the writing and delivery of the Newsletter "O Caroça" and the blog for the EVS experiences and activities, conducting interviews and preparing texts. They will also have a weekly language training. They will also go to the Agrupamento de Escolas de Arga e Lima, a partner entity of the AJD, and support teachers in extra-curricular activities. Furthermore, one of the volunteers will support the implementation of the Volunteer Management Program in the AJD and the promotion of the Erasmus+ program and its opportunities, and the other will support the multimedia work in the AJD. This project will help build and strengthen the youth’s liking of their location. With the outlined activities, the volunteers will learn a new language, acquire and/or enhance skills and competences for their personal, professional and social development, and stimulate their creative spirit and entrepreneurial skills. Therefore, this project to promote training/education, encourages volunteers and young people who participate in the project to learn, study and upgrade their skills. Also the volunteers will express their personal commitment, their ideas and their experiences in the project activities, fostering their creativity and entrepreneurship. This will boost the creation of new products/ideas and the knowledge of best practices that can be applied in their territories, fostering job creation and entrepreneurship. The volunteers, by being involved in non-profit activities and by benefiting citizens of a country other than their own, will become more aware of the importance of voluntary work in the community and in Europe. The implementation of the Volunteer Management Program in AJD will allow us to organize volunteering in the AJD. It will also create a volunteer/youth exchange and identify local partners in order to network.By facilitating joint activities with participants from different cultural backgrounds, we develop the spirit of interculturality and allow the development of solidarity, respect and tolerance between individuals. This project will instill in all participants, concerns of sustainability, that they will use later in their lives.
