Virtual European Prison School
Start date: Oct 1, 2007,

The aims of the Virtual European Prison Project (VEPS) were twofold, namely, to enhance the quality of prison education and to increase participation and widen access to education in European prisons. Its primary objectives were to benchmark best practice, inform constructive policy, harness innovation in Internet, eLearning and distance learning technologies and facilitate greater contact and cooperation among prison educators internationally. In this way, improvements in the quality of teaching and learning as well as the quality of management, evaluation and planning in prison education can be realised. It was agreed by the project partners that these objectives could be achieved through the transfer of existing exemplary practice and the establishment of a web-based Virtual Prison School. Partners were grouped to enable the transfer of policy and practice examples from one country to another (e.g. Norway to Bulgaria) with each partner country contributing to the developed Virtual European Prison School, an online repository for educational programmes, curricula and teaching materials from across the partner countries, able to be accessed by prison educators and to support the education of prison inmates (non-nationals) in their mother tongue.
