"The Advantage of Diversity" The Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium in Marbach is the largest High School in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg with a large variety of subjects. Over the last year we have been working on our new European development plan which will bring new innovative subjects and activities to our school and see internationalisation in many different fields. Intercultural education is one of the key aspects in our daily work, as one can see from the many different languages that are taught at our school. Preparing our students for an international working environment in today's globalized society is our ultimate goal. We are currently introducing CLIL into our schedule and we are busy building a network of partner companies in our European twin towns to be able to offer our students international internships on a regular basis. Our portfolio furthermore contains school exchanges with various twin towns, language study travels and conversation classes, which enable our students to participate successfully in international language certificate tests. In order to further develop our European school development plan "The Advantage of Diversity" we need to train the staff involved in the numerous new projects at our school. The teachers of our school have approved our new development plan in a voting one year ago and a first evaluation among teachers and students has identified the need for training in the following fields: - Intercultural training of exchange students, international student interns and colleagues - The training of students for an international working environment - foreign language training of the teaching staff (methodology, pedagogy and language brush up) - social and cultural training of teachers to enable them to teach students the European dimension of subjects like social studies, history, music or arts. After the training our teachers will cascade their newly acquired knowledge down to all the colleagues involved in the various projects. There are currently about 200 teachers and 2350 students at our school that will benefit from the training to a greater or lesser extent. The success of intercultural competence can not only be measured with hard facts, such as student's achievements, but also with soft criteria, such as student's identification with the school and teacher's job satisfaction. Our vision for the future is to go international, to modernize and to open up our school to Europe even more. In order to achieve this goal, we will integrate the competences and experiences acquired by staff participating in this project into our strategic European school development plan. Our diversity will be our biggest advantage.
