The Friedrich-Ebert-Schule in Griesheim is a public primary school with around 380 pupils aged 6-11 years.
The participant is 59 years old and has been working as a public school teacher for 35 years. She has been teaching at the Friedrich-Eber-Schule for 20 years. In August 2014 she attended the workshop "English in the Primary Classroom" at the English Language Centre in Brighton.
The following objectives have been set for the workshop:
• Improvement of English speaking skills
• Improvement of methodological skills when teaching English (regarding the selection and preparation of teaching materials)
• Familiarisation with various aspects of life and culture in the UK
• Expand repertoire of known songs, plays and stories for English classes in primary school
• Job shadowing at an English primary school.
Thanks to the workshop, the participant was able to improve her individual language skills, to increase the range of acknowledged teaching methods and to get insights into the educational systems of other countries through collaboration with other group members.
The methodological skills of the participant have been improved as major result of the workshop. The newly gained broad knowledge has already been applied during a methodological curriculum. Its use is not limited to English classes only. Sessions for training methodological skills for each grade with fixed content are developed twice a year. During these sessions the knowledge and skills gathered in the workshop have been put into practice and expanded.
The topics and contents of the workshop have been presented in the schools’ General Conference as well as in the English teachers’ Conference. Further details have been shared with some colleagues during other meetings. There is currently a wide selection of material for teaching English available at the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule. Since the beginning of the school term 2014/15 English is also taught in second grade for one hour each week to make use of the pupils’ natural spontaneity, eagerness and joy to imitate as early as possible while learning a foreign language.
Since the linguistic background of the group members only allowed conversations in English in order to be understood by everyone, the participants’ fluency in English has also been improved as a result of the workshop attendance.
Insights into the life and culture in Great Britain have been provided as well. As the workshop took place in Brighton, UK, the group members were able to make various excursions to the surrounding area and gather information regarding the country and its people.
Coming from several different countries, the participants also shared their experiences with different national education systems amongst them during the workshop.
Numerous songs, plays and stories for teaching in primary school have been presented in the workshop. These have been gathered by the participant and the collection further expanded in order to provide a selection of teaching materials to other colleagues, in particular to those without experience in teaching English.
Since the workshop took place during summer holidays, there was no possibility for a job shadowing at an English primary school.
Almost all teachers who currently teach English at the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule, have studied English at university in recent years. This might explain why there were no further applications for the workshop.
In conclusion it can be said that the language as well as methodological skills of the participant have been considerably improved. The knowledge gathered during the workshop, in particular regarding methodological skills, has been shared with colleagues and put into practice while developing a methodological curriculum.
On their way to internationalising teaching, some teachers have already established the daily tradition to name the weekdays, months and seasons also in English. English books, songs and poems are used regularly, not only during English classes. Topics like “Europe”, “Life in other countries” as well as “Christmas all over the world” are now common topics in classes.
