PROJECT
FINISHED
Background of Project:
Our school is currently implementing an IL ~(Instructional Leadership) approach in our school, whose aim it is to enable students to become independent learners and move the teachers role to that of a facilitator. Literacy and Numeracy is a vital part of this strategy and we as a school want all our staff to up-skill in this area and to develop new teaching methodologies and competences which will help students. With the new Junior Cycle 2.0 around the corner now is the ideal opportunity for schools to embrace the notion of cross curricular and partnerships with other schools to carry out cross curricular projects which in turn will result in literacy and numeracy improving and enabling students to become independent learners.
Objectives of the project:
The objectives of the project is to result in all our staff being up-skilled in the area of numeracy and literacy.
We will have a school full of facilitators and independent learners and we will have established partnerships with other schools that will be beneficial to our methodologies, to our students independent learning, to their skill levels and to our whole school approach to teaching.
Number and Profile of participants:
There are 2 groups involved.
Group 1: 18 teachers ( one from each subject department), 2 Special Needs Assistants, 2 Management.
Group 2: 12 teachers from Cross Curricular areas.
Description of activities:
The first activity is a training course on Literacy and Numeracy, new methodologies to be implemented.
The second activity involved visiting 5 partner schools over a 2 year period to look at their cross curricular approach and to develop ideas for short courses which would be cross curricular but would also encompass literacy and numeracy.
Methodology to be used:
eTwinning will be used as a tool of communication for projects.
Google cloud will be used for sharing resources.
A blog will be established for keeping up to date with progress and projects.
Results envisaged:
Our teachers attitudes towards Literacy and Numeracy will be revitalised and new competences will be established and these will be used for them to facilitate students becoming independent learners.
Teachers attitudes towards cross curricular teaching will be broadened and they will see themselves as teachers and not teachers of a particular subject.
Longer Term Benefits:
Students will benefit from all of this to become independent self sufficient learners.
Teachers will be more motivated and engaged with the learning process as they will be involved in a fundamental shift in how students learn.
