PROJECT
FINISHED
Numerous international and Finnish studies have shown that school age children, in Finland and around the world, do not exercise enough in terms of their health. Children and young adults should exercise the minimum of 1-2 hours per day. Only few students achieve this goal and age groups become polarized in terms of exercise. Few years ago In Denmark, they took notice that most of the people did not get enough of exercise in their daily lives in terms of their health. As a result, they executed a major school reform. In this reform, 6-8 hours of exercise was included into students’ school week. The increase of exercise was implemented by integrating exercise into various school subjects in addition to physical education lessons. Local sports clubs are in an essential role in increasing the time of exercise per day. They provide their expertise and work in co-operation with the schools. When exercising is increased, it is wished to generate a sporty lifestyle for the students. The school reform is ground breaking and it is wished to have a positive impact on the whole nation’s health. The objective of the An hour a day – youth on the move –project is to increase students’ exercise during a school day and to activate students to be part of making a school day more active. To ensure this objective is achieved in each of the schools in the city of Kotka, we wish to construct our own Schools on the move -model, which could be applied in each and every school. In addition, the model will be promoted in the international Schools on the move –network. The main objectives are:- To construct the Schools on the move –model for the city of Kotka and apply it to every school- To increase exercise and activity in school days- To encourage students to get involved and be active- To encourage students to have a sporty lifestyle- To increase teachers’ knowledge on how to make school days more active- To enable more versatile teaching methods- To increase communality and internationality in schools in the city of Kotka- To increase co-operation between schools and local sports clubsIn this project all the teachers and other Schools on the move -orientated personnel will come together to develop a functional model for the whole community. A crucial part of the project is a visit to Denmark to read up on the Danish school reform and the main factors that made the co-operation with local sports clubs a success. The Schools on the move –model is constructed in the co-operation with Danish affiliates in addition to teachers and other agents. When the project is fulfilled, it will increase interaction between the Danish teachers and students. The community’s collective Schools on the move –model wishes to increase students’ exercise especially within those students who virtually do not move at all. Young adults are provided with invigorating and meaningful ways of exercise within the school day. Including them in the planning and execution process increases the involvement of the students. Even an hour of exercise per day will achieve positive physical and mental health effects in the students that will carry on far into the future!
