Translations of 10 books into Latvian

The aim of the project is to provide Latvian society with high quality literary works (in printed and e-book format) that show the cultural diversity and our common values at the same time, learned lessons of the history and Europe of today. The project includes ten books written both in big and small or locally lesser known European languages which should be provided and introduced for the Latvian readers to be able to access, to learn and enjoy. The chosen literary works are contemporary Estonian, Macedonian, Maltese, Polish, Bulgarian, Czech, Austrian, French and Swiss novels and short stories from the period of 1960s till nowadays, representing high quality fiction. Both Macedonian and Maltese works will be the first translations of these literatures into Latvian.The list of the books has been made in close collaboration with literary advisers from academics and translators involved in elaboration of the project. Emphasizing a geopolitical aspect - North, Northeast, Eastern and Western Europe, and beyond (USA) - and linguistic aspect - Germanic, Finno-Ugric, Slavic and Romance languages, as well as different genres - novels and short stories, and different story lines and paths of history, including fantasy (a novel by H. Bemmann). For instance, a novel by Estonian writer R. Kaugver and a novel by Czech classic J.Škvorecký characterize the horror of communism regime from very different angles. Historical and philosophical view on Estonia and Poland as well as contemporary Malta, Bulgaria, France and The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia allows calling chosen writers chroniclers of their time and age, and so by selecting those works “Mansards” will link different generations, periods of history and emotional experiences of modern men in global world. Three of the authors chosen for the project have received the prestigious European Union Prize for Literature. The publication of their work will help to promote the prize and its winners in Latvia.
