We (Martin, Rainer, Mirjam, Merlin and Kaisa) are a group of young enthusiasts who are connected by our interest in nature and environment. In the last decades our ecological system has been going through a lot of changes. And not all these changes are for the better. As the technology keeps on taking over the world we tend to forget the importance of Mother Nature and the environment surrounding us. This is why our group is focusing on the survival of bees as an important link in our eco- and food-system. Theme: • Ecological, social, economic and cultural values to stop bees’ disappearances. Reasons: • Bees have an important role by carrying on ecological systems sustainability. • If bees extinct, we lose an irreplaceable part of the food chain, which decreases our daily food variety exceptionally and may lead to a global food shortage. Objectives: 1. Specifically connected with the mayor topic • Spread the problem to the public eye • To find solutions and apply them to the extent possible • To introduce the problems involved with the diminishing abundance of honeybees • The synopsis of bee products and judicious utilization Teaching methods and activities: • Team games – energisers • Handwork – braiding, carving, wax candle making • Group study – photo hunting, presentations about bees • Cultural evenings • Discussions– discussions after the film „More than honey“, explaining the problems and finding solutions • Practical activities– Planting some lime trees dedicated to bees • Excursions, hike –fact-finding trip to the bee farm, a hike in Alam-Pedja Nature reserve • Quiz • Surprises Location: Project is set in the picturesque shores of river Emajõgi in Palupõhja nature school. It takes place in 3th august– 11rd august in 2015. There are accommodation possibilities in the main house, tepee and tent. We can use sauna, campfire, field class, shower, ecological composition toilet, kitchen and swimming possibilities. Travel costs: The reimbursement of travel costs will be set after finding concrete partners. Transport is organised to all participants during the camp. Catering and accommodation is also covered. All participants are expected to be interested in the environment and the mystery behind honeybees. We expect 25 young nature enthusiasts aged 15-26 with their group leaders (no age limit) from three countries: Estonia, Spain and Lithuania. The participants are eager to learn, keen about the topic and ready to collaborate with the team. Activities are safe and well-planned. Safety requirements and rules will be introduced at the beginning of the youth exchange. Results: All participants have an opportunity to develop their intercultural skills by creating long-lasting relationships working together in multicultural groups which will broaden their horizon. By discussion and active participation personal skills (self-independence, problem-solving, leadership, team-work) are being developed. At the end of the project we hope that participants are not afraid to express their ideas in public and stand up for their values. In addition everyone will have a chance to get creative and improve their practical skills by making wax candles, lip balm with honey and building a beehive. As a result of this non-formal educational journey participants will value more the amount of work that bees do. The added value of this project is that participants have to make one short video about their point of view about this topic. After this project we expect them to spread the word and all ideas outside of Estonia so that the importance of bees would be valued all over the world.
