Think outside the box - cross disciplinary teaching of children with disability

Children with special needs (through the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with disabilities) have the right to be a full member of society. To fulfill this right there are different ways of solution. During a two years Comenius partnership eight partners from six countries met in each other´s countries to exchange models of good practice with special characteristics. All institutions/schools provide holistic and complex services for pupils mainly with physical disabilities (neurologically). Most of them are working in a "cross disciplinary" context - diversity in expertise and professional competence in the same classroom has proved to be very successful. We call this philosophy of teaching “Conductive Education”. Carefully constructed task series regarding motor skills, activities of daily living and scholastic knowledge build an undivisible unity.By exchange and networking between bigger and smaller institutions working this way, more or less experienced, a wider range of pupils can benefit from that holistic educational approach. We call on educational and therapeutic staff to "think outside the box" - not only to see their own professional field, but the whole personality of the child. The intention is to "think outside the box" - seeking innovative or proven solutions for problems in exchange and cooperation with other partner institutions. The partners explored, discussed and reflected the experiences in order to find the best way of practice. The over-all aim was to improve and implement models of holistic curricula and to spread out the results all over Europe to facilitate "empowerment" of pupils with special needs.
