Theoretical Knowledge Course for Category A Aircraft Technicians including Interactive Multimedia Content

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) published a syllabus for the training of aircraft technicians in 2003, which was last revised in 2011. There is locally developed training material available that follows this syllabus to some degree, but standardized and modernized training material that is common for the entire European region is not currently available. Aircraft technician training organizations suffer from a lack of resources for adapting, revising and developing proper training material and training systems. The quality of the aircraft training has a distinct impact on flight safety. In 1996 and 2008 Nordian and its partners received funding from the Leonardo da Vinci Programme to develop a standardised training solution for pilots (aeroplane pilots in 1996, helicopter pilots in 2008) to be used all over Europe, consisting of books, Computer-Based Training (CBT) animations and Study Guides. The output of the project is now in use by flight training organisations in Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greece, England, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, Denmark, Poland, Estonia, Finland, Croatia, UAE and Serbia, and is continuously updated. Furthermore, Nordian took part in another project under the Leonardo da Vinci Programme in 2009, the purpose of which was to define and pilot test an integrated learning environment (made up of ICT based systems, learning methodology, E-learning contents and services) that could deliver and manage innovative Blended Learning Paths (BLPs) leading to the basic knowledge and skills for obtaining an Aircraft Maintenance License (AML). The aim and objective of the proposed project is to offer a standardised training solution for the training of aircraft technicians in Europe by adapting the output of the previous projects. The new project will make use of new technology by adapting an optional distance learning feature to enhance the dissemination and exploitation of the outcome. Out of the existing aeroplane and helicopter pilot training books and interactive multimedia material from the 1996 and 2008 projects, much of the material can be used as-is, and it will be consolidated (and modified as necessary) into an E-book. Additionally, a substantial amount of new interactive multimedia material will be developed to bridge the gap between pilot training and aircraft technician training as necessary. The partner organisations together form a strong entity with qualified and experienced human resources: Nordian is a well known developer of aviation training systems which traces its roots back to the government funded National Flight Academy of Norway. Most aircraft technician training organisations have limited resources, and the project output will help them to quickly adapt to stay in line with the EASA aircraft technician training syllabus, to improve flight safety and to improve their competitive position in relation to the non European aircraft technician training market.
