In the project "Theatre and Foreign Language- A way to increase the students’ motivation for learning" two English language teachers of the "Freie Waldorfschule Graz" attend a structured training course of I.S.P in England and the teacher of class 7 conducts a job shadowing at our partner school "Freie Waldorfschule Chiemgau"in Prien, Germany.Theatre plays are part of the Waldorf curriculum. From little scetches in the lower classes to ambitious theatre plays in the secondary classes, theatre performances in the classroom have a very positive impact on both linguistic skills and personal competences. This project aims to increase the quality of foreign language teaching as well as the quality of theatre performances at school.Drama in English language lessons, be it in primary classes or in secondary classes, has significantly positive effects on the students’ language skills. Both training courses of I.S.P will provide the teachers with skills in and methods of playing theatre, ensuring a creative, student-centered and motivating approach to English language teaching. Particularly weaker or shy students can benefit from such an approach, as they will be encouraged to speak English with the help of this methodology. Job Shadowing at a school with very experienced and qualified teachers in both planning and realizing theatre projects extends the professional and methodical competence of the class teacher, helping him to organize and perform a theatre play with his own class. The students gain competences in the fields of linguistic competence and knowledge of classic literature and drama. The process of theatre production supports technical (stage construction, lightning systems) and organisational skills. Furthermore and more importantly, it develops and strengthens social skills such as the ability to work in a team as well as communicative skills.Acting on stage encourages the development of personality and enhances self-confidence. This leads to feelings of success for weaker students and can thus prevent early school leaving. The gained knowledge is disseminated in our school as well as at the BUND of Waldorfschools. International contacts will be established and transnational cooperation will be promoted.
