The Young European Hood: creative circus, active, and trustful
Start date: May 1, 2013,

The project "The young European Hood: creative circus, active, and trustful" will bring together 36 young people and 12 youth leaders from nine EU member states (Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, The Netherlands, UK, and Ireland). They will explore each other’s cultures, their fundamental rights according to the European Union, to promote healthy living and to collaborate on a creative venture using the medium of contemporary circus. The participants will spend eight days (6-13th of August 2013) in the south of Stockholm, mostly in the Circus Hall in Alby, Botkyrka, living, learning and working together under the supervision and support of experienced social circus youth leaders. The project will involve each participant presenting key information about their own backgrounds and where they live as a means of learning about cultural difference and similarities as a starting point to the project. Participants will all have significant experience of circus learning and performance and will begin the programme by staging short shows they have prepared in order to demonstrate their strengths and specialities. The content will be inspired by the articles of dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity from the mini book My fundamental rights in the EU. From this point, the young people will be encouraged to learn new skills from each other and will begin the work of creating a new ensemble performance which will portray their shared and distinct cultural identity. In relation to this discussions in round-tables will focus on the youths’ identification as a European citizen and their fundamental rights. The participants will also undertake a number of cultural trips to learn about and partake in life of youths of the local community, and to the city of Stockholm in order to understand the cultural diversity of the region, and to gain an insight into the cultural activity enjoyed by young people in Sweden. The project will culminate in a public performance of the ensemble show, which will be performed twice. Once at one of the largest youth festivals in Europe: “We Are Sthlm” on a public stage in town before the public of Stockholm, and the second before the public in the municipality of Botkyrka south of Stockholm. The performances are promoted by Cirkus Cirkör. Audiences will be surveyed to ask for their views on the content of the show and their view on the collaborative aspect of the project. The final element of the project will be a coming together of participants to evaluate the impact of the project and to try and determine whether their understanding of each other’s cultures and their awareness of being a European citizen has deepened as a result of the project. The project will be documented and disseminated, the result will be broadcast and available to download on the internet.
