The Sea as Our Neighbour: Sustainable Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal Communities and Habitats on Europe’s Northern Periphery 3.11 (CoastAdapt)
Start date: Dec 31, 2008, End date: Dec 30, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

CoastAdapt is a project aimed to safeguard people living in North Atlantic coastal communities and help them adapt to the impacts of climate change. Five pilot study sites in Iceland, Norway, Ireland and Scotland have been identified to determine the issues experienced by local communities. Municipalities and citizens, working together with project partners, will develop and trial adaptation strategies designed to cope with the impacts of climate change. Achievements: CoastAdapt was a three-year project aimed to safeguard people living in North Atlantic coastal communities and help them adapt to the impacts of climate change. Five pilot study sites in Iceland, Norway, Ireland and Scotland were identified to determine the issues experienced by local communities. The CoastAdapt Adaption toolkit was developed, see: http://coastadapt.org/?page_id=2An Adaption Handbook was writtenand can be downloaded under http://coastadapt.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/The-CoastAdapt-Handbook.pdfA series of reports from the CoastAdapt project are available on the projects website. The workshops were held in Norway, the Outer Hebrides, and Ireland. Guðríður Ester Geirsdóttir• Resilience to natural disastersResidents in the village of Stokkseyri in southern Iceland live with the threat of natural hazards. The village is located within the South Iceland Seismic Zone and subject to earthquakes that can be > 6.0 on the Richter scale. The purpose of this paper was to investigate residents’ perception of the communities’ vulnerability, resilience and adaptation to the recurring natural hazards in the area and the impact of socio-economic changes thereon.
