The training course “The Power of the Word: Poetry slam for fighting the social inequality“ was organized by Mostar Friedensprojekt e.V. (MFP) and held from 13th November until 22nd November 2015, in Potsdam. 35 Participants from 18 countries, who are already active youth workers in the youth sector or intended to be become active in the near future took part in this training course. It was hosted in „Hochlland“ seminar-house of Hochdrei e.V., Potsdam. This TC was designed for social and youth workers active in the formal and non formal educational sectors. It focuseds on poetry slam method, as a tool for the youth workers to discuss the topic of social inequality as well as social exclusion and to engage youngsters to act against it. During the workshops of the TC, participants learned about the method of poetry slam, , about the process of poetry creation, its usage and impacts for the youth work, the created their own poems and performed in an oral poetry competition, as well as Poetry Slam has its roots in urban metropolies and hip-hop culture of the 1990s and has expanded to be a shared discursive space, where particularly young people can exchange their stories of who they are, where they come from and what they feell about the world around them. Especially for those, who are deliberately silenced and preferably unheard, Poetry Slam provides the opportunity to express themselves and to opens a dialogue between different social, political and ethnical groups. Through the exchange of their poems, participants of Poetry Slam are encouraged to critically observe today’s modern society and to create a link between language and deed by developing concrete actions against injustices rather than just complaints. During the workshops of TC participants have learned how to create a link between language and action in the youth work and develop a literary movement involving critical complaintsdialogue about social conditions in which young people live. By using this method, youth workers can achieve that youngsters „open up“, emotionally and politically, and make a link between the „history“, which is written in books and the nowadays situation, the „history“ which is being created by us. The Poetry Slam's principle of an “open forum” promotes participation from all individuals, regardless of age, education, ethnic, sexuality, gender, poetic form or style. Especially it is particularly helpful for youngsters from low-income areas as well as minorities and oppressed groups, to whom poetry slam becomes a tool, to express themselves, to exchange about the problems and to feel, that they are not alone.
