The project is a progression of the award winning work in bilingual radio drama produced by "The Works" partnership. With this project, we are extending both the partnership and the approach we are taking to collaborative work in the context of inter cultural dialogue. We have maintained core membership of "The Works" but developed it with the inclusion of a partner from France and expanded its reach with the involvement of new partners from Georgia. Drawing on the skills and experience gained from producing a series of bilingual radio dramas, this project will take a multi disciplinary approach to the interpretation of a single subject. Carmen is a quintessentially European story. Inspired by a Pushkin poem, written in French, first performed as an opera in England, this story of a Spanish gypsy transcends all cultural barriers. The relationship of Carmen to Spain has a particular resonance with the relationship of Georgia to Europe. The partnership will commission a shared new adaptation. From that starting point, each partner will interpret the story in their own medium and in their own language. This will result in a range of new insights and new perspectives on the story. We shall produce radio drama, a piece of interactive radio theatre, interactive web based audio drama, choreo drama and a stage play. Audiences across Europe will share in the "Carmen Festival" as participants, members of audiences viewing the performances live and as a wider audience for the radio and web based performances. In taking a shared starting point for individual interpretation, the project will create synergy from the different cultural perspectives of the partners whilst allowing their individual creativity to be expressed. Partners will exchange skills and will learn directly from each other. Audiences will have access to uniquely creative new work of the highest quality through the widest possible range of access points and will know they are a European audience.
