The Language and Culture of France ,Germany and Spain
The school teaches French from Reception Class through to Year 6 but gives pupils a 'taste' of German in years 3 and 4, and of Spanish in years 5 and 6. The two teachers of Spanish started as non-Spanish speakers, and have attended 2 courses in Santander already and have completed some self-study.
Having established a link with a Spanish school, we should now like to do the same with a school in France and Germany. This puts the learning of the languages into a real context and furthers our inter-cultural understanding, adding to our international dimension. It is our aim to set up regular communication with new partner schools (in France and Germany), and to continue links with the school in Spain, to exchange ideas and practices. This may involve use of ICT eg skyping, exchanging videos etc or by more traditional forms of communication. Above all, it is a chance to share our languages and culture and to hear native speakers.
The school intends to send 4 participants to France. As well as deepening their own language skills and knowledge of France, they intend to establish links with a partner school there. This will lead to an exchange of cultural knowledge and encourage both schools to continue their language learning.
The activities included in the course will be visits to the partner schools to meet pupils and staff and establish ways of communicating in the future. There will be study of the languages, provided by native speakers, to strengthen the participants' language skills. There will also be activities to develop an understanding of the French/Spanish cultures, and opportunities to gather authentic resources.
German is our second subsidiary language and we would like to establish links with a German primary school, as with France, and have the opportunity to improve German language competence. We would seek 2 mobilities for this purpose.
These teachers who introduced Spanish into the year 5 and 6 classes are presently in their third year of teaching the language, having started completely from scratch with their own knowledge of the language. They have benefited enormously from the language and methodology courses they have attended last, bringing back many ideas and much enthusiasm. We should like to send these 2 teachers to Spain to nurture these links and continued learning.
The activities during the course will be shared with a range of stakeholders, including governors, staff and pupils. It is envisaged that the outcome of the course will have a beneficial effect on the teaching of French German and Spanish to all of our pupils and lead to long-term partnerships with the French/German/Spanish schools.
