In a press release on April 14 2014 he EU's Justice Commissioner said "Europe has been promoting gender equality since 1957 (...) For us Europeans gender equality is not an option, it is not a luxury, it is an imperative." The press release also states " In 2013 the European Commission continued taking action to improve equality between women and men, including steps to close the gender gaps in employment, pay and pensions discrepancies, to combat violence and to promote equality in decision-making.' EU action is focussed on closing the pay gap and cracking the glass ceiling and cites important statistics about the current situation in the job market (Link to press release http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-14-423_en.htm) As teachers in schools we feel strongly that these changes must start within the school system and future employees of the EU must be given the adequate resources and self esteem to aspire and reach their full potential. There is a tendency amongst the students in our schools towards preconceived notions with regards to society’s expectations of the roles of men and women today, both in the work place, home and within the school system. We share a concern about the ongoing unhealthy nature of relationships between the sexes and the impact this has on an individual’s self esteem, and consequently on their choice of further education and career. As a group we strongly feel that gender issues should be addressed at school level in order to promote and foster change in the future work place. As secondary school teachers we are increasingly aware of the growing problems of sexual bullying, FGM, low self esteem/image and cyber bullying including sexting, and the growing influence of the media, all of which have an impact on our learners' aspirations for post compulsory education and training. If our schools are to make a contribution to the promotion of equal opportunities and tolerance and thus promote the development of our local area in terms of emancipation, this project will be a significant step in the right direction. We will organise blended mobilities as well as activities throughout the two years to meet this objective. This will involve lectures, workshops and student led campaigns to raise awareness of the above issues. Our resources come from varous experts in the field, our subject teachers and the European Institute of Gender Equality. The key goal is to raise attainment across all partner schools. The key expected result is increased knowledge and awareness amongst all participants of how gender, education and opportunity in the world of work are closely linked. Students will have more understanding of how their behaviour and sense of self is affected by the media, peer groups and background, and how to overcome preconceptions in order to attain their potential in school and beyond in the work place. The project begins in the classroom but will continue to have wider positive impact beyond the school setting, including the work place
