In view of the new Finnish curriculum 2016, The English School wants to answer the growing need in the metropolitan Helsinki area of English education geared towards a diploma . This need hits mostly the high school aged students who, due to augmented European mobility, come to Finland with their families and to whom the three years will not suffice to learn adequate Finnish to pass the Finnish Matriculation Examination. By implementing Cambridge IGCSE / AICE administration, examination and curriculum development The English Schools will deepen the curriculum of the participant subjects (English language and literature, realia, i.e. General Studies - history, geography, sciences, religion and foreign languages). The art and foreign language teachers will further participate to courses in Italy and France that deepen their knowledge of subject area and methodology. Simultaneously, there is a strong will to bring primary English teaching up-to-date, to gain better ICT skills and to improve learning results with a focus on the classroom environment through drama and social skills. There will be 2 participants from administration personnel and 10 from the teacher body: 2 administrative persons: administration, examinations and curriculum of the Cambridge IGCSE / AICE examinations; one of the participants also represents English language and literature. 2 teachers for IGCSE / AICE; General Studies and foreign languages 1 elementary teacher: teaching drama, United Kingdom 1 elementary teacher: ICT teaching & updating English as CLIL langugage in the United Kingdom 1 elementary teacher: a course in Synthetic phonetics in United Kingdom (2 days) 1 elementary teacher: a CELTA-course in Spain ( 4 weeks) 1 special education teacher: Social skills in classroom (Italy) 1 art teacher: Teaching art outside the classroom (Italy) 1 French teacher: Authentic materials in teaching French (France) 1 French teacher: Good practices in international cooperation - job shadowing in France The participants will participating to the job-shadowing and / or the course of their domain. They will inform their colleagues before departure in order to get questions about the course in which they are about to participate. The participants keep a journal about their course, and pass on the information to their colleagues with a blog and / or a final report. As a result, the Cambridge IGCSE / AICE teaching will be implemented and clarified. The subjects included in the Cambridge curriculum will gain more dimensions, especially in English language and literature, art, French and General Studies subjects. In the elementary school, the English teaching becomes more efficient and up-to-date, and the general know-how of ICT skills gets better. The teaching of social skills and drama enhances the learning atmosphere in the classroom. The exchange program with Quintin, France becomes a natural part of the school curriculum. Long term benefits of this project will result in a greater number of students at The English School and a naturally more international student body. As there are several elementary teachers participating in European in-service training sessions, we may see an augmentation in thinking with a European dimension and a possibility for numerous cooperation projects in the elementary school. By supporting the French Quintin project through a session of job -shadowing, we gain in a valuable working cooperation between Jean XXIII and The English School.
