Technical and vocational students pushing their boundaries by learning new skills in Spain and Portugal
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

In 2015 and 2016 4 students of the seventh year "Interior Decoration" went to Portugal en 5 students of the sixth year "Automechanics" went to Spain for a training period. Both groups were accompanied by one or two teachers. Both international projects were very succesfull and our foreign partners asked us to come back. SPAIN Five students of the sixth year "Automechanics" followed a course of two weeks in a big boat company, Escar l'escala, in the vicinity of L'escala. They were accompanied by their teacher practice. They got the possibility to renovate a boat so they learned all kind of different techniques: purification of ship hulls, antifouling, sand blasting, treatment against osmosis, fiberglass and mechanics repairs, tuning indoor and outboard motors. They got in contact with the various departments of a big boat company. In every department they were personally supported by experts in this field and assisted by their teacher. This was necessary given the size of the company. This kind of formula was not possible in a normal school internship. In our school they only have the chance to work with passenger cars. Their training period was also their topic for their final exam at the end of the year. PORTUGAL Four students, after finishing successfully a 6 years course of vocational training, are specializing themselves in “Interior Decoration” during an additional year. They followed a two week training period in a big wood company, Vicaima, in the vicinity of Porto. They were accompanied by their practice teacher. The company has expertise with the production and innovation of interior doors. The students had to fulfill two projects during their training period. First they had to develop innovating concepts of frame and doors. Second: they had to develop hinges to change doors effortless from turning right to left. The designs of the students will be actually produced in Portugal after a thorough selection procedure. The students were fully involved during the entire production process. Thus they got in touch with the different departments of the multinational company: design, raw materials, production, stockroom, workmanship and transport. In every department they were supported by one mentor and assisted by their teacher. This was necessary given the magnitude of the company. This kind of formula is not possible within a normal school internship. The company has several CNC-machines at her disposal. The students had the advantage to practise with this advanced machine in a professional environment. Later on they can transfer their expertise to other students at school.
