Teaching Sign Language and the Culture of the Deaf..
Teaching Sign Language and the Culture of the Deaf for Different Educational Groups
Start date: Oct 1, 2004,
The Sign Language Teaching (SLATE) project focused jointly upon deaf culture and the pedagogics and theory of sign language. Recognising a need for deaf teachers and educators to study sign language teaching in their own signed language(s), partners worked together to review existing research material and knowledge in order to create an innovative yet transferable teaching format which would support the sharing of knowledge and experience amongst adult educators. A new teaching format was created to support sign language teaching, making active use of new technologies, and this was subsequently offered as an In-Service Training (IST) course. With lectures, workshops and other IST course activities simultaneously interpreted into the 5 national sign languages of the participants (plus international sign language), an interactive course DVD was subsequently produced to promote the end project results.
