Teaching Programming Towards Early Development of Analytical, Structural, and Creative Minds

Analytical and critical thinking are transversal learning skills that help an individual excel in wide areas, professional, social, civic, and personal. They facilitate the establishment of objectives, the evaluation of alternatives, and sound decision making. In academics they offer benefits in wide subjects, ranging from science and technology to humanities and art. Introducing engaging methods for building analytical thinking early in life can help children develop fundamental problem solving, learning skills with wide applicability.cMinds aims to use programming concepts as a means for developing analytical thinking in elementary school children through wider blended learning that combines project- and inquiry-based individual exploration and class collaboration and can be integrated into existing school curricula. The advantages of the proposed approach are numerous: the precise, step-wise, and structural nature of programming is inherently analytical; it is deeply rooted in universal logic that exists in all cultures, transcends language barriers, and can bring learners closer through inclusive learning. Graphical interfaces can increase motivation, foster creativity, and help focus on concepts. Foreseen blended learning activities to be supported through on-line available tools will include:- Basic programming concepts- Problem deconstruction and identification of components- Identification of objectives- Alternatives evaluation and visualization - Solution modelling - Process optimization through iteration- Solution synthesis and decision making cMinds will engage children and teachers in learning design fostering a sense of ownership that encourages long-term engagement. The project will support the teaching process through good practice guidelines on the integration of the proposed programming-based analytical thinking concepts and supporting on-line tools into existing practices helping teachers to make better use of ICT in education.
