Teaching for Europe
Start date: Jul 1, 2014,
End date: Jun 30, 2016
PROJECT
FINISHED
The Luigi Casale Technical High School is located in Vigevano (Lombardy- Italy); it has 780 students and 4 courses: Administration, Finance and Marketing; Tourism; Construction and Environment, Fashion System.
The ‘Teaching for Europe’ project was inspired by the need to promote effective professional development of the teaching staff.
As a recent school reform introduced CLIL courses in the last year of secondary school, compulsory from the 2014-15 school year, the teaching staff of the Casale School felt the need to attend training courses in English language and CLIL methodology abroad.
The goals of the project were the following:
- to train a group of teachers to enable them to offer CLIL courses
- to increase the participants' ability to teach in an innovative and involving way,
- to increase the participants' awareness of a common European identity
- to help students to get the learning outcomes they need to face the labour market and University courses successfully
- to promote an education based on active citizenship and mobility in Europe.
8 teachers with a B2 level of English took part in the project; they were selected by an internal school committee, led by the Headmistress. Several criteria aimed at maximizing the impact on the school were considered: professional qualifications, previous participation in European projects, roles and responsibilities in the school and real ability to improve the quality of learning experiences.
The planned activities, which took place from 1-7-2014 to 30-6-2016, were the following:
- attendance of 12 training courses in English-speaking countries for one or two weeks, in July and August 2014 and 2015, at specialized teacher training schools with particular reference to CLIL methodology
- implementation of CLIL courses for the students of Casale School
- dissemination of good practice.
The project was managed with constant supervision from the CLIL Committee of Casale School with regard to:
- the preparation of participants (English language improvement course both offered by the school and through the CLIL network in Pavia)
- the creation of a series of contacts with the partners located in Ireland, United Kingdom and Malta
- the management of logistic aspects (travel, food and accommodation)
- the quality of the training program.
In the short term the results were:
- creation of CLIL modules in English by every teacher who attended the training course abroad
- implementation of CLIL courses in every Casale final year class in 2014-2015 and 2015-2016
- sharing of the teaching resources created with other Casale teachers and the Pavia CLIL network
- organization of training seminars involving Casale School staff as well as teachers working in other schools
- setting up CLIL workshops for local middle school students and their families (Open Day - Open Night- Seminars to guide students in the choice of secondary school course)
- improvement of the quality of Casale School courses, with a special focus on students’ knowledge of English and on key competences needed for employability
- effective involvement of the school in other Erasmus+ projects (e.g. KA2 ‘Scintillating Science- Maximizing ICT to Motivate Learning’, KA1 ‘Designing School New Perspectives – DSNP’).
In the long term period the expected results are:
- improving the quality of CLIL methodology and involving new teachers and classes
- increased internationalization of the school with possible new Erasmus + projects.
