"teaching creative writing in europe"
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

“teaching creative writing” teaching & learning lectures, teaching, participation in conference workshops and panels since its beginnings in 1992, the vienna poetry school (schule für dichtung, sfd) has put an emphasis on internationality. in 2005, it was a founding member of eacwp - european association of creative writing programmes - and it consistently partcipates in international cooperations, conferences and eu-projects. from the start, sfd has been playing an active part in the theoretical discourse about creative writing. it has an unquestioned competence in terms of including different forms of media into the teaching of literary writing as well as a unique know-how especially in the field of sound poetry - which still is unchartered waters for nearly all european creative writing institutions. sfd takes part in the following conferences in 2014 with speeches, a class, panel participation, workshops/classes participation: “international eacwp conference on pedagogy of writing, university of jyväskylä und orivesi, finnland & “symposium of the eacwp – european association of creative writing programmes on teaching creative writing”, paris 3 participants in finland: fritz ostermayer, artistic director of sfd, author, performer, designer of sfd-classes. speech on “teaching ‘uncreative writing’“ – as taught by author kenneth goldsmith worldwide. orhan kipcak, multimedia-author and media designer, sfd-teacher, international teaching assignments. speech on multimedia aspects when teaching creative writing. juergen berlakovich, author, sound artist, performer, sfd teacher. teaching the following class as part of the conference at orivesi college (15 units): “acoustic poetics. history – theory – practice. soundwise and musical aspects of language in literature“. 1 participant in france: harriet nachtmann, literary scientist, producer, eu coordinator of sfd. introducing sfd and current projects to staff as well as teachers of european creative writing schools and universities. developing joint eu-projects. in particular, by additionally attending classes for teachers, these visits in finland and france are both a teaching and a learning experience. the presence of sfd at these international conferences - with speakers and delegates from finland, italy, france, spain, czech republic, germany, denmark, sweden, romania england and more - shall make the tradition of the viennese avantgarde, which is represented strongly at sfd, internationally known. it shall position sfd and vienna as an important and firm place in the area of teaching creative writing. as a consequence of these conferences, it is intended that cooperations on a european level will evolve and that the exchange in the area of teaching creative language writing will be continued and further expanded. a definite aim is to invite european teachers/students/staff to vienna and at the same time to send teachers/students/staff from vienna to the partner institutions. furthermore, aims are intercultural and scientific exchange and reciprocal enrichment in all areas of creative writing, especially in pedagogical and didactical methods. the new teaching methods experienced at the conferences should serve as inspiration for sfd-teachers. creative writing especially often is limited by language barriers. teaching/learning literary writing in another language, which is not one's mother tongue, is an aspect to build on and on which level there still has to be a lot to learn. in this sense, an exchange of experience in finland and france would be very desirable as well as the development of new methods in this field. another aspect is to further improve language knowledge, sfd teachers should be able to teach also internationally, staff should be able to organise international projects without any difficulties.
